Reflection on the Monk Mindset and Quote
In the ancient Egyptian desert of the 4th century, there was an older monk reputed for his holiness and wisdom. A younger monk sought him out to learn the keys to wisdom.
As they were walking along a river and conversing, the older monk suddenly grabbed the younger one, and dunked him under the water, holding him there as he grasped for air.
Finally, the older monk pulled him from the water. The younger monk yelled as he coughed up water, “What are you doing! Are you crazy?”
The older monk looked him in the eye and said,
“Until you need prayer like you need air, you have not even begun to pray.”
Prayer is the air that gives us spiritual life, that allows us to truly live.
We may breathe air day in and day out, yet be dead inside.
Prayer transforms our mere mortal flesh into divine flesh worthy of true life.
Put It Into Practice This Week
Close your eyes, and take slow deep breaths. With each breath, imagine you are breathing in the very life of God – all good things, peace, light, beauty, joy.
Allow the oxygen of true life to flow through all of your being, one breath at a time, until you feel entirely transformed and radiant.
Wishing you abundant peace this week,
John
